How to Choose the Right GPA Converter
The converter you need depends on your starting point and your destination. If you have percentage scores and need to know the US GPA equivalent, the percentage to GPA calculator is the quickest option. Students from Indian universities who need their CGPA converted for US graduate school applications should use the CGPA to GPA calculator for accurate 10-to-4 scale mapping.
For converting between any two international scales, the GPA scale converter handles multiple systems including US, Australian, UK, and Indian scales in one tool. If you need to go between letter grades and GPA or percentages, the grade converter covers those translations.
Australian students should use the dedicated Australia GPA calculator, which handles the 7-point scale, WAM calculations, and US GPA conversion all in one page.
Understanding GPA Scales Around the World
United States: 4.0 Scale
The US 4.0 scale is the most widely recognized GPA system globally. An A earns 4.0 grade points, B earns 3.0, C earns 2.0, D earns 1.0, and F earns 0.0. Many schools add plus/minus modifiers that adjust by 0.3 points. This scale is used for both high school and college.
Australia: 7-Point Scale
Australian universities grade on a 7-point scale where High Distinction (HD) earns 7.0 at 80% or above, Distinction (D) earns 6.0, Credit (CR) earns 5.0, Pass (P) earns 4.0, and Fail (F) earns 0.0. Some universities also use the Weighted Average Mark (WAM).
India: 10-Point CGPA
Indian universities commonly use a 10-point CGPA scale. The rough conversion to a 4.0 GPA is to multiply CGPA by 0.4. So a 9.0 CGPA is approximately a 3.6 GPA. However, exact mappings vary by institution, which is why dedicated conversion tools are useful.
United Kingdom: Degree Classifications
The UK does not use a numerical GPA system. Instead, degrees are classified as First Class Honours (70%+), Upper Second (2:1, 60–69%), Lower Second (2:2, 50–59%), or Third Class (40–49%). These roughly map to 3.7+, 3.0–3.6, 2.3–2.9, and 1.7–2.2 on the US scale. See the grading scale guide for a full comparison.
How GPA Conversion Works
GPA conversion maps one grading system to another using established correspondence tables. The core calculation for GPA itself is the same everywhere:
What changes between systems is what grade points are assigned to which performance levels. Converting between scales requires mapping equivalent achievement levels across different numerical ranges.
When You Need an Official GPA Conversion
Online calculators are useful for self-assessment and planning, but some situations require an official evaluation. Graduate school applications in the US and Canada often require credential evaluation from agencies like WES (World Education Services) or ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators). These agencies review your original transcripts and produce an official document that verifies your academic standing in US-equivalent terms.
Study abroad programs, professional licensing bodies, and some employers also require formal credential evaluation. The process typically takes 2–4 weeks and involves sending official transcripts directly from your institution to the evaluation agency.
Common GPA Conversion Mistakes
- Assuming scales are linear. A 7.0 on the Australian scale is not simply 7/10 of a 10-point CGPA. Each scale has different thresholds for each grade level, so conversions require proper mapping tables.
- Using the wrong formula for your institution. Some Indian universities use a 4.0 scale rather than 10.0. Some Canadian universities use 4.33. Always confirm which scale your school uses before converting.
- Ignoring grade weighting. When converting, you need to account for credit hours. A high grade in a 1-credit course has less impact than a moderate grade in a 4-credit course.
- Relying on a single conversion method for official purposes. Online converters are approximations. For applications that require verified conversion, use an accredited credential evaluation service like WES.
