How to Use This EZ Grader
Grading a stack of tests takes time, especially when you are calculating percentages for each paper by hand. This easy grader turns that into a two-step process that updates results as you type.
First, enter the total number of questions on your test, quiz, or assignment into the Total Questions field. This works for any assessment from a 5-question pop quiz to a 200-question final exam. Next, enter how many questions the student answered incorrectly into the Number Wrong field.
Select your grading scale from the tabs above the inputs. Choose Standard 10-point, Plus/Minus, or 7-Point to match your school or district guidelines. Results update instantly as you type — no button needed. Your percentage, letter grade, grade ring, and complete grading table generate automatically.
Use the what-if scenarios to see how nearby scores would change the letter grade, and check the threshold bars to find out exactly how many fewer wrong answers would reach the next grade boundary. Print the grading table and tape it to your desk for fast reference all semester.
How the EZ Grader Calculates Scores
The EZ grader uses a straightforward formula to convert wrong answers into a percentage score. This is the same calculation that the original physical E-Z Grader sliding tool has been doing on teacher desks for decades. Our digital easy grader does it instantly and generates a complete grading key for any test length.
Percentage = ((Total Questions – Number Wrong) ÷ Total Questions) × 100
Example: 22 correct out of 25 = (22 ÷ 25) × 100 = 88.0% = B+
The formula works because each question on a test carries equal weight. If a test has 25 questions, each one is worth exactly 4 percentage points. Getting 3 wrong means losing 12 percentage points from a perfect 100.
Choosing the right scale matters more than most teachers realize. Check the grading scale reference table below or visit the full page for detailed definitions. For tests where questions have different point values, use our test grade calculator which supports point-based scoring.
Why Test Length Changes Everything
The number of questions on your test fundamentally changes how easy grading works, and many educators overlook this when designing assessments. Understanding this relationship helps you build fairer tests and set more accurate grade boundaries.
On a 10-question quiz, each question is worth 10 percentage points. A student who misses just one drops from 100% to 90% — a full letter grade on most scales. Missing two drops them to 80%. The difference between an A and a C is just two questions, leaving almost no margin for error.
On a 50-question test, each question is worth only 2 percentage points. Missing two questions still leaves the student at 96%, well within the A range. Longer tests create more granular grade separation and give students room to miss a few questions without dramatic grade consequences.
This is why standardizing your test lengths saves time across the semester. If all your unit tests are 25 questions, print one grading table from this EZ grader and reuse it for every assessment. Teachers who do this report cutting their grading time significantly, since they no longer calculate percentages for each individual paper.
When grading assessments where questions carry different point values, switch to our test grade calculator which handles point-based scoring. For calculating how individual test scores combine with homework, participation, and other categories into a final course grade, our grade calculator handles weighted categories automatically.
