How to Convert CGPA to Percentage in 3 Steps

Converting CGPA to percentage takes under a minute when you know your university’s formula. Most Indian institutions follow one of two standard multipliers, and our calculator handles both automatically.

  1. Enter your CGPA in the input field above. This is the cumulative grade point average from your marksheet or transcript, typically on a 10-point scale.
  2. Select your university from the dropdown. Each university uses a different conversion formula. CBSE uses ×9.5, while VTU and Anna University use ×10. SPPU has its own formula: (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
  3. Read your percentage instantly. The calculator displays your equivalent percentage, GPA on the 4.0 scale, letter grade, and a visual breakdown. Scroll down to compare how your CGPA converts across all supported universities.
Pro Tip: Bookmark this page and check your percentage after each semester. Many scholarship applications and job postings list cutoffs in percentage, not CGPA.

CGPA to Percentage Formula and Worked Example

The conversion formula depends on your institution. The two most common formulas in India are CGPA × 9.5 (CBSE/UGC standard) and CGPA × 10 (used by VTU, Anna University, JNTUH). SPPU follows a unique formula: (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.

The Formula

CBSE / UGC Standard: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
VTU / Anna / JNTUH: Percentage = CGPA × 10
SPPU (Pune): Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10

Reverse (Percentage → CGPA):
CBSE: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5
VTU: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 10
Worked Example: Sneha scored a CGPA of 8.2 at SPPU. Using the SPPU formula: (8.2 − 0.75) × 10 = 7.45 × 10 = 74.5%. Using the CBSE formula, the same 8.2 CGPA would be 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. The difference of 3.4 percentage points shows why selecting the right university matters. Her US GPA equivalent is (8.2 ÷ 10) × 4 = 3.28 GPA.

The 9.5 multiplier was established by CBSE based on a statistical analysis of student performance data. A perfect 10.0 CGPA converts to 95%, not 100%, because the formula accounts for the actual distribution of marks. SPPU’s offset formula subtracts 0.75 before multiplying, which produces lower percentages than the straight ×9.5 method.

Does Every University Use the Same CGPA Conversion Formula?

No. Indian universities follow different conversion formulas, and using the wrong one can misrepresent your academic record by 3 to 10 percentage points. CBSE and most UGC-affiliated universities use CGPA × 9.5. Technical universities such as VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka), Anna University (Tamil Nadu), and JNTUH (Telangana) use CGPA × 10. SPPU (Savitribai Phule Pune University) uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, which produces the lowest percentage among major universities for the same CGPA.

GTU (Gujarat Technological University) and Mumbai University generally follow the ×10 multiplier for engineering programs, while KTU (APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, Kerala) and MAKAUT (West Bengal) follow ×9.5 for most programs. Always verify the formula on your university’s official grading document or academic regulations page.

Common Mistake: Applying the CBSE formula (CGPA × 9.5) to an SPPU transcript. An 8.0 CGPA at SPPU is 72.5% using the correct SPPU formula, but 76% using CBSE’s formula. Job applications and graduate school admissions expect the formula matching your institution. Use our CGPA to GPA calculator if you need the US 4.0 equivalent for international applications.

Australian universities like UniMelb, Monash, and RMIT evaluate Indian transcripts differently. They convert CGPA to a WAM (Weighted Average Mark) on their 0-100 scale, then classify it as HD (High Distinction, 80+), D (Distinction, 70-79), CR (Credit, 60-69), or P (Pass, 50-59). An 8.0 CGPA from a well-ranked Indian university typically maps to the Distinction range at most Australian institutions. Use our Australia GPA calculator for precise Australian conversions.

For students comparing their percentage across classmates at different universities, the comparison table in our calculator shows how the same CGPA produces different percentages under each formula. A student with 8.5 CGPA at VTU sees 85%, while the same CGPA at SPPU produces only 77.5%. Neither student performed better or worse — the formulas are simply different.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate CGPA to percentage?
Multiply your CGPA by the conversion factor for your university. The most common formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5, used by CBSE and many Indian universities. For example, a CGPA of 8.2 converts to 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. Some universities like VTU and Anna University use CGPA × 10 instead. Always check which formula your institution uses.
Is 7.5 CGPA equal to 75 percentage?
No. Using the standard CBSE formula (CGPA × 9.5), a 7.5 CGPA equals 71.25%, not 75%. However, at universities that use CGPA × 10 (like VTU or Anna University), 7.5 CGPA does equal 75%. The percentage depends entirely on which university formula you use.
How much is 7.6 CGPA in percentage?
A 7.6 CGPA equals 72.2% using the CBSE formula (7.6 × 9.5 = 72.2%). At universities using the ×10 multiplier (VTU, Anna University), 7.6 CGPA equals 76%. At SPPU, it converts to 68.5% using the formula (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
What is a 4.0 CGPA in percentage?
A 4.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale equals 38% using the CBSE formula (4.0 × 9.5). This is a bare pass grade. However, if your CGPA is on a 4.0 scale (US system), then 4.0 represents the highest grade, equivalent to approximately 95-100%.
Why is 9.5 used to convert CGPA to percentage?
CBSE established the 9.5 multiplier based on a study of student performance data. They found that multiplying CGPA by 9.5 gives the closest approximation to the actual percentage marks. A perfect 10.0 CGPA converts to 95% (not 100%) because very few students score above 95% in absolute marks. This formula was introduced for the CBSE Class 10 grading system.
Can I convert CGPA from a 4-point or 5-point scale?
Yes. Our calculator supports 4-point, 5-point, and 10-point CGPA scales. For a 4-point scale, the formula is Percentage = (CGPA / 4) × 100. For a 5-point scale, it is Percentage = (CGPA / 5) × 100. Select the matching scale in our calculator for accurate results.
