How Australian University Grading Works
Most Australian universities use five grade classifications: High Distinction (80–100%), Distinction (70–79%), Credit (60–69%), Pass (50–59%), and Fail (below 50%). Each classification maps to a point value on the 7-point GPA scale, with HD at the top (7.0) and F at the bottom (0.0). This differs significantly from the US 4.0 scale, where an A requires 90% or higher.
• Psychology (12 credit points): Distinction (6.0)
• Mathematics (6 credit points): High Distinction (7.0)
• English (6 credit points): Credit (5.0)
• Biology (12 credit points): Pass (4.0)
GPA = (6.0×12 + 7.0×6 + 5.0×6 + 4.0×12) / (12+6+6+12)
= (72 + 42 + 30 + 48) / 36 = 192 / 36 = 5.33
Emma’s GPA is 5.33 on the 7-point scale, approximately 3.0 on the US scale.

Converting Australian GPA to US GPA Scale
Australian universities use a 7-point scale while US universities use 4.0. Direct conversion is approximate because the systems assess differently. The most commonly accepted mapping is: HD (7.0) equals 4.0 US, D (6.0) equals 3.7 US, CR (5.0) equals 3.0 US, P (4.0) equals 2.0 US, and F (0.0) equals 0.0 US. For values between grade boundaries, this calculator uses linear interpolation to provide a more precise conversion.
